Lesson from Hannah

Yesterday I attended a Masters Writing class taught by Hannah Tint, author of The Good Thief. While I've taught writing classes for years, I try to attend as many as I can as well since what I don't know about writing and storytelling and editing still scares the hell out of me, especially when I'm about to start on a new project. Like now.

Hannah proved to be as a great a teacher as she is a writer, filling the hour and a half session with practical advice on the revision process. Now did she tell me anything I didn't already know? No, but she offered a fresh perspective, a new way of thinking about the things I should have been thinking about all along, and that was exactly what I needed to hear.

Excuses are not reasons

It's been way too long since I updated this site, but I have several good excuses

  • Things have been really hectic at my day job
  • I needed to spend some quality time with friends and family
  • Going to the gym ate up more time than I realized
  • I've bought a lot of new books and felt I was falling behind
  • Home repairs/chores...they never end

Do any of these sound familiar? I'm betting they do. Because they’re the bullshit excuses we grant ourselves when we know that there's no real reason why we aren't doing the things we say we want and/or need to do. But that's all they are - bullshit excuses.

I don't know about you, but I'm getting back to work.

If you don't see at least one new post per week on this site, remind me to get back to work. The first one who does, gets a prize. So now you have a job, too.
